motor swap
Does anyone know if an 88 vs750 motor will fit in an 87 vs700 frame ?

Re: motor swap
Yep, same frame. The difference in the 2 engines is only the diameter of the bores. The carbs may not swap check the throat sizes to be sure, I'm not sure what year the change was made.

Re: motor swap
Yep. But you'll need the electrics and the radiator is bigger on the 750. The carbs are bigger too, but you can rejet to use your old ones. Radiator you may be able to get away with also.

Re: motor swap
According to the specs, jetting is the same for both models, CDI will depend if it is a single or double pick-up.

Re: motor swap
Thank you everyone for your advise my motor developed a loud ticking noise and now has low compression in both cylinders rear 50psi front 70psi do I thought it might be easier to replace the motor instead of rebuilding.

Re: motor swap
The timing chain has a habit of jumping a tooth if the tensioners are worn. May not be the problem, did you check the compression with the throttle wide open? If you didn't you will get a low reading. I have an 800 and a 750, both of them have a slight Intruder clatter when cold but I tend to adjust the valves on the loose side. [emoji41]

Not just jumping teeth, but the tensioners break also. Common Intruder problem, but not too serious, just annoying.Lechy wrote:The timing chain has a habit of jumping a tooth if the tensioners are worn. +1 to WOT while compression testing. Could also be valves too loose or leaky valve guides.

Re: motor swap
Would the motor from an 86 vs700 work in a 87 Vs700 ?

Re: motor swap
So I retested the compression with the throttle wide open and it made a big difference rear 125psi front 135psi still not sure what's wrong wit this motor

Re: motor swap
It's probably not the motor, what's it doing? If it's just ticking, it's most likely loose valves or broken cam chain tensioner.87vs700 wrote:So I retested the compression with the throttle wide open and it made a big difference rear 125psi front 135psi still not sure what's wrong wit this motor

Re: motor swap
It seems to run fine but at idle it has a loud ticking and acts like its about to die like the timing is off .

Re: motor swap
Could need an idle sync as well, but I'm betting the tick you hear is the timing chain. If you don't hear it throughout the RPM range, it's the timing chain. It's annoying, but not really an issue. Mine did that the entire time I had it, but kept running right up until I sold it. Heavier oil, like Rotella T, carb syncs and valve adjustment will all help the noise get quieter, but it won't go away until you tear down the top end and change the tensioners.87vs700 wrote:It seems to run fine but at idle it has a loud ticking and acts like its about to die like the timing is off .

Re: motor swap
So I’m looking at getting a 93 vs800 parts bike, can I put all the 800 parts on a 87 vs700 frame?

Re: motor swap
I believe you will find the 700 radiator is smaller than the 800, how it mounts may have to be modified.Slinky0512 wrote:So I’m looking at getting a 93 vs800 parts bike, can I put all the 800 parts on a 87 vs700 frame?
IIRC the cdi and stator pickups are different, so replace all the electrics as a group.

Re: motor swap
That was my plan taking all the 800 components and put on the 700 frame, I’m just not sure if the mounts are the same, clearance should not be an issue I would think, but then again with my luck wont fit at all.navigator wrote:I believe you will find the 700 radiator is smaller than the 800, how it mounts may have to be modified.Slinky0512 wrote:So I’m looking at getting a 93 vs800 parts bike, can I put all the 800 parts on a 87 vs700 frame?
