Some have expressed sadness at the dropping of these majestic trees. However when they were being dropped the mindset was on industrialization, not on ecology.

Back in the 1800's, the Willamette Valley was all timberland. The people moving into the area wanted farmland. They just burned a large number of trees to clear the land for farming.
My grandfather and father worked in the redwoods in northern CA. Nothing fake about those photos.
The butt cut log with the smooth area had been trimmed because on many of the big trees the pulled slivers would be as much as 10 ft long, they wouldn't transport them that way, too much weight.
