To Appreciate God’s Creation

Lord God, may all of your creation -
from the vastness of mighty planets and stars to the lowliness of the smallest living creature I can see -
remind me to live in wonder and appreciation of all that is around me.
Amen.

Prayer for the Morning

The night has passed, the sun shines its light upon us,
and the day lies open before me. As I rejoice in the gift of this new day,
so may the light of your presence fill me with love for you and my fellow man,
holy God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Abide with me, I pray, now and forever.
Amen.

Prayer of Submission

Dear Lord, I give you my hands to do your work;
I give you my feet to go your way; I give you my eyes to see as you see;
I give you my tongue to speak your words; I give you my mind that you may think in me;
I give you my spirit that you may pray in me. Above all,
I give you my heart that you may love in me. I give you my whole self, Lord,
that you may grow in me, so that it is you who lives, works and prays in me.
Amen.

Prayer For Teachers and Students

Almighty God, I pray to you to look with favor upon our universities,
colleges, and schools, that knowledge may be increased among us,
and sound learning flourish and abound. Bless all who teach and all who learn;
and grant that in humility of heart they may ever look to you, the fountain of all true wisdom,
and not be led by the devices of their minds into the pride and hollowness that comes from knowledge without truth;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

"A Homely Beginning"
April 1, 2018
Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus' head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. (John 20:6-7)
Read John 20:1-9

It seems so tidy, somehow. When the disciples look into the tomb, they see the linen cloths lying on the stone bed, with the face cloth folded up neatly a little distance away. There are no grand explosions, no linen left dramatically draped around the room.

Rather it suggests to my mind that when He rose from the dead, Jesus simply sat up, removed His wrappings, folded His things (no doubt as His mother taught Him!) and then stood up and went about His day.

Such a quiet, homely beginning for the day that changed the world. A beginning like any other -- one that says "This is home; this is comfort; this is your life where you belong." A beginning unlike any other -- because this is the day that sees death undone, first for Jesus, and ultimately for every Christian who belongs to Him.

We fear death; for death is the enemy; death is a stranger and unknown to us. But Christ is no stranger. He is our Lord, our Savior, our brother and friend and refuge. And He is the One who has mastered death.

Now we do not need to be afraid. Jesus our Lord goes with us, through life and suffering and death and life again. He knows the way, and He holds us safe through all terrors. And just as it was for Him, so it will be for us some day: we will rise from our graves to enjoy the eternal life He gives -- the life that is home, that is comfort, that is where we belong -- forever -- with Jesus.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank You with all my heart for rising again. Help me to trust in You as I face life and death, knowing that You will be with me and help me through every step of the way. Amen.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, there are things in my life like the stone that guarded Your tomb -
- things that imprison me though not You.
Come, please, roll away these stones and set me free to live trusting in You. Amen.

Prayer for God to Dwell with Us Today

Holy Jesus, who has promised that if we love you, you and the Father will love us and come to us and make your home with us,
I give you my love without reservation. Your words are sacred and I aspire to live by them,
this day and always, and I glorify you for your sacrifice of pain and death, made out of your love for us,
that all who follow you might find salvation and eternal life.

Bless me this day to live with your Spirit, to resist temptation to evil,
and to show your joy and love to all. Make your home with me, that I might be truly blessed, I pray,
Amen.

Prayer to Dedicate Oneself to Christ This Day

Almighty God, as I cross the threshold of this day, I commit myself Your care.
Mold me in your image. In everything I say and do, let my mind be on the eternal
goodness of heaven rather than the vanities of earth, meaningless pride,
or the anger and envy that tear apart my soul.

I dedicate myself to your holiness and pray that you may be with me today as I look to you for guidance and wisdom.
Let me know the joyful feeling of having done something that pleased you.
Let me never feel the pain of knowing I have disappointed you.
And let me live without fear, without confusion,
always steady in the certainty of your forgiveness and ultimate victory, I pray,
Amen.

Pray For Forgiveness

Gracious God, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide,
and too deep to undo. Forgive what our lips tremble to name,
what our hearts can no longer bear, and what has become for us a consuming fire of judgment.
Set us free from a past that we cannot change;
open to us a future in which we can be changed;
and grant us grace to grow more and more in your likeness and image,
through Jesus Christ, the light of the world. Amen.
Amen.

Prayer for Freedom from Fear

O Lord, I ask you to deliver me, and all of your children, from the fear of the unknown future;
from fear of failure; from fear of poverty; from fear of bereavement;
from fear of loneliness; from fear of sickness and pain; from fear of age;
from fear of death. Help us, O Father, by your grace to love and fear only you,
and fill our hearts with cheerful courage and loving trust in you; through our Lord and Master Jesus Christ.
Amen.

Morning Prayer

Lord, I come before you today and I thank You for all the blessings that You have given me.
Many times my life is so full of busy work that I neglect my relationship with you.
I know that You never neglect me, for if You did my very life would cease to be.
Continue to guide me in my journey, be with me, and with those who pray with me,
for although we are in different places around the world, we gather spiritually in your name.
May we feel your presence among us. In Jesus’ precious name I pray.
Amen.

Prayer for the Morning
For God's Help

Lord God, Enlighten what is dark in me,
Strengthen what is weak in me,
Mend what is broken in me,
Bind what is bruised in me,
Heal what is sick in me,
Revive whatever peace and love that has died in me.

Restore me, Father God, as you would have me,
That I may better serve you today,
and show your Glory to all the world.
In the name of Christ, I pray,
Amen.

Scripture Reading: Luke 7:16-23

John’s disciples told him about all these things. Calling two of them, he sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”
Luke 7:18-19

Jesus and John (the Baptist) had little in common. John spent much of his adult life in the wilderness. Jesus traveled from village to village with throngs of fans. John knew one way to preach—urging people to get right with God through repentance and forgiveness of sins (Luke 3:3). Jesus took his preaching to different levels, and he displayed God’s grace and power in miraculous acts.

Luke does not waste our time with flowery statements. Jesus healed people of diseases that John wasn’t capable of curing. Jesus evicted evil spirits that were bent on ruining people’s lives. People who were once blind could share stories about Jesus giving them sight. John’s disciples saw kingdom miracles as they saw lives changed through Jesus’ ministry. And they reported all this to John.

Jesus told them to remind John of all they had witnessed. Jesus ministered to the blind, the lame, the leprous, the deaf, the dead, and the poor. These were the people whom God had chosen to include in the annals of grace. Jesus was pointing out that transformed lives made the most convincing proof that he, the Messiah, was the one who had to come, bringing the good news and new life of God’s kingdom.

There are miracles in our lives today too. Are you taking note and reporting them?

Savior, help me to see you at work in the transformation of my life and in the lives of others. Help me to tell of those miracles too. Amen.

Morning Prayer for Faith

Give us, Lord, a lively faith, a firm hope, a fervent charity, a love of you.
Take from us all lukewarmness in meditation, dullness in prayer.
Give us fervor and delight in thinking of you and your grace,
your tender compassion towards us.
The things we pray for, good Lord, give us grace to labor for:
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Morning Prayer

Lord God, the Most High, our one hope,
Everlasting light of heaven and earth,
We break the silence of the peaceful night;
Pour on us the fire of thy mighty grace,
Banish the slumber of a weary soul,
That brings forgetfulness of thy laws!
O Christ, look with favor upon thy faithful people
Now gathered here to praise thee;
Receive their hymns offered to thy endless glory;
May they go forth filled with thy gifts.
Amen.

Scripture Reading: Luke 7:24-35

I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
Luke 7:28

John’s disciples had come to ask about Jesus. After they left, Jesus told John’s story. John was a man who was fully alive to God, had great zeal for God’s calling on his life, and yet was misunderstood by many people. Jesus set the record straight that John was a prophet, and more—not a person possessed by a demon and doing crazy things in the desert. Jesus made clear that John’s mission from God was to prepare the way for Jesus’ own work as the Messiah.

John baptized many people into new lives of repentance and forgiveness. More important, his ministry prepared people’s hearts and minds for the coming of God’s kingdom through Jesus, planned from the beginning of time. And Jesus gave John the best compliment a Savior could bestow, saying that “the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” What does this mean?

Jesus’ words showed that John was a humble, true servant of God and that they also could serve humbly and faithfully, bringing honor to God’s kingdom as believers in him, no matter what background they came from.

Jesus lifts up people whom society calls untouchable, unworthy, or unredeemable. If you and I believe this, we are set to serve, for he exalts us too.

Dear Jesus, I admit that I need to repent and be forgiven. Show me the way to kingdom living in your strength, not mine, spreading your love and good news to all. Amen.

Prayer for the Nation

Almighty God, who has given us this good land for our heritage;
I humbly pray that we may always prove ourselves a people who remember your favor
and are glad to do your will. Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning,
and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion;
from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way.

Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought here from so many different lands and languages.
Grant the spirit of wisdom those to whom we entrust with the authority of government,
that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to your law,
we may demonstrate your praise among the nations of the earth. In times of prosperity,
fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in days of trouble, do not let our trust in you fail;
all which I ask through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Morning Prayer of St. Thérèse

O my God! I offer Thee all my actions of this day for the intentions and for the glory of Christ Jesus.
I desire to sanctify every beat of my heart, my every thought, my simplest works,
by uniting them to His infinite merits; and I wish to make reparation for my sins by casting them into the furnace of His Merciful Love.

O my God! I ask of Thee for myself and for those whom I hold dear,
the grace to fulfill perfectly Thy Holy Will, to accept for love of Thee the joys and sorrows of this passing life,
so that we may one day be united together in heaven for all Eternity.
Amen.

Prayer To Follow God's Will Today

O God, the author of all good, I come to You for the grace another day will require for its duties and events.
I step out into a wicked world; I carry about with me an evil heart. I know that without You I can do nothing,
that everything with which I shall be concerned, however harmless in itself, may prove an occasion of sin or folly,
unless I am kept by Your power.

Hold me up O God and I shall be safe. Preserve my understanding from subtlety of error,
my affections from love of idols, my character from stain of vice, my profession from every form of evil.
May I engage in nothing in which I cannot implore Your blessing, and in which I cannot invite Your inspection.
Prosper me in all lawful undertakings, or prepare me for disappointments.
May every creature be made good to me by prayer and Your will. Teach me how to use the world and not abuse it,
to improve my talents, to redeem my time, to walk in wisdom toward those without,
and in kindness to those within, to do good to all men, and especially to my fellow Christians.
And to You, O God, be the glory.
Amen
The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting.
