Speakers for my vs800... draining my battery!

Post by Kingkoa1 »

[https://postimg.cc/gallery/WNDFbd6] Ok so I bought these
Boss audio speakers for my 98' VS800, Boss audio 2 speaker setup w/ built in amp. It comes with a in fused line and an on & off / volume control switch, works and sounds freaking great!! But the next day after install I tried to ride out, and the battery was dead...
At first I thought, either I turned the key the wrong way when I turned the bike off or I didn't turn the speakers off. I trickle charged the battery almost full and started the bike right up, ran it for like 20mins. Then off and bed time. Got up and it was drained again! I was wondering if it could be where I hooked the power wires. So you know right under the fuses, there's two small pos & neg screws, I figured it was for an external power source and the speakers ran fine first few days but now I wonder.... anyone know if I am wrong about those screws? Or why it's killing the battery. Pls help k

Those two screws are hot all the time, direct to the battery. They are not affected by the key switch. So if the unit draws any power in it's alleged off position, it'll drain the battery.

The two post in the fuse box are to hook up a battery tender. Splice into the horn wires for the speakers. They are easy to get to and switched to the ignition.
If you have any type of electrical issue, have your battery load tested before you do anything else. Any auto parts store will test it for free.

Yeah - you need a switchable power source. Horn, brake light switch, pretty much any wire that gets power when you turn the key.

Not sure if the 800's have this but the 1500 has a spare connector in the headlight bucket for aux lights.

So the spare connectors in the headlight would be a safe bet then to hook the speakers power source¿

They should - as long as they power up / down with the key you'll be fine.

Have you ever pulled the wire nest out of the headlight bucket? If not you are about to go through hell.

The horn wires are switched and easy to get to.

Hey guys thank you, for the job done and didn't take two minutes. I ended up hooking into the license plate light wires... they were right under the seat and I didn't have to move or re wire anything, they were connected with bullet connectors. Easy as half-moon Hawaiian pie!! :funnylast:
