2003 Suzuki Intruder Vs1400

Hey guys. So i just recently purchased a 2003 intruder 1400 and changed out all the fluids. Went to change the air filters and there were NO FILTERS! So i added K&N filters and went to fire her up. When i did, the idle speed was extremely high (as if i was giving it full throttle in first gear). I’m assuming i need to adjust the idle cables on the carbs but i wanted to know what you guys suggest.

There is a thumb wheel on the bottom of the rear carb to adjust the idle.

Are the throttle cables free / have slack?. Sounds like you have pulled the cable somewhere along the way of pulling things apart which is holding the throttle open.

Please enjoy them. Things under the seat and tank are pretty critical in their locations, the manual will tell you how things need to be.

Thanks guys! I had to adjust the thumb wheel. I’m just learning how carbs work. I have my sync kit coming in tomorrow so that’ll be my next and hopefully last step to getting this beauty to run clean.

So I’m currently checking the sync on my carbs and my rear is indicating a loss of vacuum when i pull the throttle. Does this mean i have a leak in the intake somewhere?

Define loss of vacuum.
You are trying to balance the carbs...one may draw more vacuum than the other...but shouldn't show a loss.
If you have already balanced them at idle, twist the grip and hold it at a steady elevated rpm to adjust the high speed sync.
When you twist the throttle and the rpms are ramping up, you will get irradic readings until it settles out.

You will always get a drop in vacuum when opening the throttle. But if it is only on one cylinder that means it is the only one accelerating.

Ok so i finally got the intruder running good. Left it alone for 2 days because of work. Went to start it and nothing. It only ran with the choke on. Rebuilt the carbs and i am having the same problem where it’ll start and run with choke but it’ll idle very low to the point where it’s about to stall (with choke on). Turn the choke off and it stalls. Adjusted the idle screw, no change. Idk what to do next.

First, make sure you have 1/8" of freeplay at the throttle grip.
Second, adjust the sync cable so that both carbs butterfly plates start to open at exactly the same time.
Third, adjust your A/F screws.....instructions below.
Forth, you will need a manometer (sync tool) to perform the sync, either home made or bought.

A/F adjustment
1. Make sure you have about 1/8" of free play at the throttle grip.
2. Motor off,Gently seat each A/F screw and set both A/F screws 2-1/2 turns out
3. Engine running at operating temp, lower your idle to about 800 using the thumbscrew on the rear carb.
4. Engine running at operating temp, turn an A/F screw CCW until the motor starts to stumble, Then screw CW until the motor starts to stumble again, count the number of turns between, then screw CCW to achieve the best idle...about 1/2 way between stumble points.
5. Repeat on the other carb.

Now sync:
1. Remove screw near each manifold, install sync tool. (don't lose the fiber washers)
2. Raise idle to 1000 rpm with thumb screw.
3. Remove gas tank and hook up an aux. fuel source.
4. Engine running at operating temp, adjust the idle sync cable to balance carbs using sync tool. (rear cable on front carb)
5. Using the throttle grip, raise the rpms and hold them constant, any rpm will do between 2000 and 3000 rpm.
6.Adjust the throttle cable to balance carbs using sync tool. (front cable on front carb)

Presto!
7. Remove sync tool and replace screws and fiber washers.
8. install gas tank.
9. Test ride and smile.
You may want to blow a fan on the engine, it can get quite hot.
Make very small adjustments, and tighten each locknut when done.

Hi did you get to the bottom of this? I can balance my carbs at idle but the vacuum on my rear carb goes to zero with throttle when the front carb vacuum goes up

That means that the rear carb is pulling (doing the work) more than the front carb. You need to adjust the front carb throttle to pull more or back the rear carb off.
