98 Intruder VS800 turn signal relay for hyper flashing

Post by Simsb201 »

Hi everyone,

I am a newbie to Intruders. My uncle just gave me one that he had sitting in his garage for 15yrs. I’m sorry if this conversation was already had as I am new to this forum. But, I am looking to change out the turn signals to LED and I know there will be an issue of hyper flashing due to the led pulling lower watts. I have looked everywhere on line to find one of those relays that plugs in and resolves that issue but I could not find one for my bike. I see them for almost all other Suzuki models and years but nothing for a 98 VS800. Does anyone know of a plug and play option for this bike I can buy? I do not want to mess with the wiring. The brighter light is not worth me potentially doing some kinda damage to the electrical system. Thanks!

Auto zone and many other places sell electronic flashers.
A flasher is a flasher....if it works on other model bikes, it'll work on yours...it may even work in your car.
Any electronic 2 pin flasher should work.

Thanks but that’s not really helping me. Can you give me some details on how I would go about doing it?

Take your existing flasher to an auto parts store, and look one of the same size and shape that says it will operate LED lamps. Make sure to check for + and - symbols, to make sure they aren't reversed (I don't recall if they can be on the VS800 flasher, but it is something to check).

Changing the signals can be done a few ways.
Either buy LED bulbs that are a direct replacement similar to this...
1156 single filament for the rear, 1157 dual filament for the front.

Subin has a set for sale here:

He also has the flasher.

Or buy complete signal housings with LED bulbs.
The front must be dual filament to accommodate running lights and signals.

Trace the wires back to their connectors.
On the 800 the front connects inside the headlight bucket, the rear connects under the seat.
The flasher plugs in under the left side cover.
Remember that LED's are polarity dependent.

DOWNLOAD a manual, the link is pinned at the top of the tech page.

I got an LED relay for my LC off eBay - it was pretty cheap.

Not sure if the 800 has the same relay - the LC has the sidestand switch in the same relay.

It was this type:

I bought a bunch of those LED bayonet bulbs a few years back for my LC thinking that anything I could do to lower the power draw on the marginal charging system would be a good idea.

To be honest they were no brighter than the incandescent bulbs. I ended up not using them.

Here is an update on what I ended up doing. I finally found a plug and play options. Probably payed too much but it works.

If you have any type of electrical issue, have your battery load tested before you do anything else. Any auto parts store will test it for free.
