Give the linkage a good coat of PB or WD.
When the engine oil gets ready for a change it does effect the shifts.

While cleaning/lubing the linkage, check to see if it needs adjusting, too.

Any bikes you have with the joints covered with the small rubber covers need lube. If riding on salt covered roads, often.Make a tool from a small paper clip. Bend up a bit of one end to lift rubber cover.Stick a nozzle end in and spray a hit of your choice of lube in a can. My usual is white grease. On old trade inbikes with rust PB blaster may be needed. Good luck and wear out dont let them rust out.

My 92 Intruder 1400 always had a difficult time going to neutral. It was often a lot easier just to tap it down from second then pop it up from first

In addition to lubing the linkage
also
where linkage emerges from the engine casing >> these parts should be flush with casing. They tend to wiggle out a bit. Tap them back in with a block of wood.
