Odd noise. Piston slap?

Post by Connal »

Hey all, new member here. And I have a question.

I have. 2003 intruder 1400, and under mid level RPMs there is an odd noise. It almost sounds like a whirring, or a howling?

At idle, there is nothing. And under hard acceleration, it almost has a "chug" noise to it. Like a real heavy thump.

I have asked a few people about it. The dealership said it was my exhaust. But I am worried it could be something worse, and I really don't want to damage the bike at all.

The are no real mods done to the bike. I added a 12v outlet, but nothing else.

I had the carbs synced last year.
I might go for it again. Thanks. :)

I would also not lug the engine. These are higher revving engines (than say an HD... less so than a GSX), so if you are putting along at a low RPM and then hammer it.... you can get noise as well.

Thanks scooter, I will keep that in mind. I think the noise is coming from the transmission? I noticed that it only makes the noise in gear.

It's normal so don't worry. Straight cut gears are naturally noisy.
