A few years ago I bought a used engine for my 99. The seller said it is out of a 96, but it is a 5 speed. I think it was sold new in Mexico.

Ill tell you one thing, its hard to get a good match and get a good look at speedo doing 130. Perhaps he has a quick accel kit(gearing changed) and didnt have a speedo healer to compensate. I would regularly do 130 on my gsxr and was alwats terrified... would never be able to match with someone to compare speeds going that fast lol

1996 VS1400 stock 105 mph. When it was new and 13,000 miles later.

My 1996 1400 four speed even after 45,000 would still show same 112mph top but 105 would have been more right I bet. I thought I wanted a five speed till I rode them.Fourth and fifth so close not worth the shift [emoji2] Now my RoadStars fifth gear is really nice.

Been doing some reading on engine tuning because of another thread. One thing I was reading about was the cam grind AND timing. Advancing the timing raises the power band to a higher RPM.

These engines were tuned for a low to midrange torque/hp. When they first came out they were the best cruiser for high gear roll ons, 40 to 80 there wasn't many bikes that could keep up with them and none of the cruisers could, period.

I think the major problem with top speed is the cam grind/timing. It is timed for lower rpm power, and it has it, so it runs out of power long before hitting the rev limiter. If you wind it up in the lower gears you can feel the power drop off well before it hits the rev limiter. High gear, 4 or 5 speed it won't even reach the limiter.

For normal riding the power band is EXACTLY where I want it. Power in the higher rpms will detract from the ride ability at lower speeds. I like being able to twist the wrist at 40 and pull without down shifting.

I have had my 2001 Intruder 1400 for 2 years now with a vance and hines exhaust. My top speed was about 105 and started getting loose on the steering around 90, UNTIL I put a little Slipstreamer Spitfire windshield on it (link below). Now that the wind is off my chest and I'm not creating a huge sail, I can get it up to 120, I was weaving traffic on the interstate comfortably 2up at 100-105 last week and had plenty more throttle past that. A small windshield made alll the difference. Idk if its the downforce from the shield on the front end or just the lack of sail effect but the handling is nice and tight, no floating in the lane, and cruising easy in the triple digits. If I had unlimited open road in front of me, I believe I would have reached at least 125 as it was still gaining momentum and was not quite all the way full throttle when I hit 120.

Now run a GPS on it; top speed is 114 mph. Stock speedo is out about 10 %
