Vs1400 top speed

Hey guys, i have my 1400 for 3 years now and since the first day, top speed seems to be 100mph. Stock and running lean: 100. Now, with cobra exhaust and k&n air filter:100.

Im starting to think that the ignition curve is so bad on the stock CDI that it's the reason for the stop at 160; what do you think? Or maybe the jetting is too small?

Opinion?

Sounds like you carbs are out of sync.

Even with carbs out of sync; WOT is WOT, both carbs would be pushing at their almost max even if their max isn't exactly the same for both; right?

According to: THIS
105 mph is the posted limit.
If you need to convert to mph, you can do it: HERE.

105, I cant believe it. I don't really like to go that fast anyway, but the bike sure feels like its got more than 5mph left in it at 100mph...

Had every motorcycle owned wide open and my 1400 many times in the 45,000 put on it.With every thing right if would show 112 but sure hit a wall at 90 and all after that so slow coming. My new 1983 GS1100ES had a peg at the 140 but would not touch it.It saw lots of drag strip time and burnt the crank at 25,000.While getting a new crank had it took out to 1170.It did not help the E.T. over two hunderds at the strip but would pag the 140 on a open highway after that.My new 01 1500 Nomad was by far the best two up bike ever owned.Only bike ever for a 1,000 mile day on at 1030 when I was 55 on way home from Sturgis meet.It was slowest on big end of any big bike I owned at only 103! No strain to speak of just like you hit a stwich and it stopped pulling. My friends new 02 like it got a few more mph by a remap of the Fi after pipes and air cleaner change.103 was good enough for me so mine stayed pure stock the over 82,000 in a little less than four years. It rode and handled as good as new the day I sold it.Just a slow top end good bike.

No, if one carb is lagging, then one cylinder is pulling the other along slightly. I'm aware the 1400 has a rev limiter and perhaps if yours is only a 4 speed that can have an effect on it. Otherwise, that's really the only variable.

A Dyna 3000 will allow you to raise the limiter. Just saying.

Well, that make sense but still I'm curious to see what is dragging my bike down like that.. 100MPH isn't that fast.

I'm going to sync it soon, I'm still looking for somebody around my place with a carbtune or something( or i'll do it redneck with tubing and 2 beer bottle)

@ enforcer....the shop manual states that the 1400 rev limiter is set at 7000 RPM.

The dyna won't improve that very much (7500 RPM). I think the only way you'll ever see a 1400 spin that fast is if it's NOX powered. But the dyna will allow you to change the curve that the stock ignitor won't let you do.

Well, mine got up to 95 with ease before I backed off. It felt like it had a lot left, but that was fast enough for me!

Yes, I agree with that. It's pretty good up to 100. I've had mine that fast myself. It starts getting kinda weird at that speed though, like it starts getting a mind of it's own..probably the actual road condition I was driving on wasn't very good at all. But..it started feeling like the bike wanted to go in different directions.

I've been on my bikes at 115mph for several minutes without issue in the past, the intruder was, humm...but then again way different road conditions too.

This confirms what's I always thought. One of my friends rides a cbr1000. For shifts and giggles I tried to run him. He stopped me of course but he said at my fastest (he matched me my speed to make fun of me) I was doing 130. Of course our speedo doesn't go that high so I'm not sure. This just confirms he was full of shit lol

I know the PO of my bike did some work on it, I am not sure what was done but I have buried the needle over 120 one time on the autobahn. It wound out but it will do it.

Both my 87 and my 99 will pull hard right up to 100 and feel like they are going to 120, then they just quit pulling at about 105/107 and that is all they will/would do.

Never hit the rev limiter, just quit pulling.

a friend of mine had a 1200 sport Sportster, both of my 1400's would outrun him to max speed, then he would pass me. :bang: :bang: :bang:

not sure of why, but I surmise that it is something in the ignition system that retards the spark at higher speed, either that or the carbs just don't breath enough air. I didn't have a tach when I ran them up like that so I am not sure of the RPM. In the lower gears I can hit the rev limiter and it is very definite when it gets to the rev limiter so I don't think that is the problem with the speed limiter issue.

When ive had a beer my 87 will head towards 100mph like it was going to hit 140. But when ive not it is very difficult to get it over 80. Thoughts of wire spoked wheels and siezures keep my wrist frozen. My RPM limiter is my helmet that comes off my head and hangs around my neck at over 80.

Therefore with my well publicised drinking problem my 87 has not seen 100 since my mate died 6 years ago, another RPM limiter that comes in at an early 70mph.

And then of course there is the stupid Thai drivers that can literally do anything, blink right --turn left. This keeps me down to 50 ish and thats about where I stay. No one will ride with me any more because I am too slow but then a lot of them are dead so better keep to 40.

That first line had me laughing out loud Fred. :lmao:
My 01 1500 Nomad felt strong right till 103 then just like a light switch no more.Slowest big bike on top end I ever owned but so nice two up.Over 82,000 in less than four years. 1400 45,000 in around same time but it was a third bike not main bike like the Nomad was.Nomad never failed to start even below 0.If out side 1400 NEVER started if below 25.

There should be a thread dedicated to starting the 1400. Thailand can never be cold but still cold is cold as in not run for a while. I don't use choke but put it on when it fires, never use throttle with the choke on because its not a choke but a old start circuit that needs vacuum to suck fuel in.

You can try Choke and then none. If you mixture screws are on the rich side it helps a lot.
