2001 1400 intruder
Does this bike have a speed limiter and if so how do I get rid of it.

Re: 2001 1400 intruder
It's not really that it's capable of so much HP but rather that it makes peak HP below 6K RPM. As far as translating to a speed limiter, that's apples to oranges. It's mainly there to prevent damage, as is possible with all air/oil cooled engines at high RPM. If one were to add an extra or better oil cooler, fan or other way to keep the engine cool, it really wouldn't be a big deal to go with a Dyna to raise the limit and eek out a few hundred more RPM. But honestly uncorking would do better to add more power to the torque curve rather than rev the engine higher and you'd still get better top speed. No matter how much power/speed in on tap, it's still not a sport bike.98VS1400 wrote:It has a rev limiter which is controlled by the ECU. This will correlate to a speed limiter essentially. You can only change the rev limiter by switching to a Dyna ECU, but you won't gain much. IIRC, the stock rev limiter is 6,000 RPMs. The Dyna will let you adjust that up a little. I went that route on my '98 VS1400, but didn't gain much. The engine is only capable of putting out so much HP.

Ok so 105 is the best it will do. I bought the bike from my uncle last year and have done a lot of tlc to it I built drag pipes and k&n style air filter still need to jet carbs and sync. Just wish I could bury the 120mph speedometer

Lmao. Guess that answers that. Unless there is a bore and stroker kit to boost hp and torque? Now that would be somthing haha.

The suspension and the rest of the bike is not built to go those speeds.
It's called a cruiser for a reason. I have had the 1400 a little over 100 mph and in all honesty it does not feel all that solid at those speeds. I would not want to run down the highway at 100 + for any length of time.

A sync will help. Jetting properly too. Drag pipes need baffles to create some restriction and reverberation. They did (maybe still do) make some high compression pistons, heads and jugs. They were made by Orient Express. As well as, Del Orto made a flat slide carb and single carb manifold. If you can find those pieces, a Dyna ignition, lower it, run a wider front tire, I'd say you could go as fast as you want. Daveguy was the only one I know who got it to run right with that fuel, ignition and powertrain setup on his chopper. And he eventually ditched the Del Orto carb for a Weber.fordtruck95 wrote:Ok so 105 is the best it will do. Re: 2001 1400 intruder
I am always looking for the next fast cruiser and the intruder is good for 3 gears and 4 and 5 are just to ride around with. I get 95 out of third and can only do 105 with 2 more gears. I had a 1100 shadow 1986 and would bury 130. Guess my next bike will be American. Always wanted one. But will always keep this intruder just for fun. I was thinking about trying to manufacture an manifold to run one carb for both cylinders. Just don't know how it would work. The tube would be rather long

Here's what the Del Orto looks like.
You won't gain anything from one carb though. 2 is more efficient, when tuned properly.

I've seen the European guys build them. But they do some outrageous custom fabrication.fordtruck95 wrote:I want one haha just for the look and simplicity of one carb

Re: 2001 1400 intruder
Top speed on the Intruder is 114 MPH, but as others have said you don't want to be "cruising" at that speed. BTW top speed won't be achieved in 5th gear, drop it to 4th for a top speed run & you'll want a fair bit of pavement to get it there, but it WILL get there

Re: 2001 1400 intruder
Had more fast fours than anything and ran Suzuki fours at the drag strips 1977-87.Most all the time since 74 have had at least one v-twin cruiser in the barn allso for slow fun.Six were Harleys but allso had a virago,Nomad,1700 Star and the 1400.While like all japan bikes owned it was not telling the truth on its speed-o [emoji2] .My 1400 felt strong up to 90mph then all the shown 112 was slow coming. They were not fast but felt like it.My 1700 RoadStar is that way but is a bit stronger as it should be.Had a first year softtail FXST 1984 and the 1400 felt so much like it.Both would drift a little in long sweepers .Guess it was the rake and long wheel base.Unlike the Harley the 1400 had a really bad rear seat and the wife hated it.Worse thing about the 1400 were its so poor cold weather starts.Allso some of its small screws and bolts were soft like and strip out easy. But the good strong tough motor made up for it.If it had just came with mags to run tubless tires would have been a great bike.
