Wet clutch friction plares - sand?

Has anyone lightly sanded the friction plates to bring back life to the clutch.

Nope, all you need are good springs. The OEM ones are junk.
With 180,000 miles on the plates on my 99 they were still on the highside of the specs.
If your clutch is slipping get a good set of springs. Not sure where you can get good ones now.
I would recommend Designer springs but I'm not sure how to contact him now because he has been banned.

I've heard you can add a washer under the springs. What are your thoughts?

Designer will be back about mid March but he only has VS1400 springs. Your best bet is Barnett springs for the 800. I have never heard of putting washers under the springs. I would ask Navigator about that.

I have heard that that helps but it is only a temp fix.

Yes it works as it essentially tightens the springs.
However ultimately it is a band-aid fix for out of spec springs.
To my knowledge Designer springs are only for the 1400.
There's a bunch of aftermarket springs for the 800's on eBay.

BARNETT Clutch Springs: 501-87-04009
When installing, DO NOT OVER TORQUE. The clutch basket is cast aluminum and can be destroyed by over tightening the spring bolts. Many home wrenchers complain about the softness of the spring bolts, this is intentional by Suzuki to protect the basket.

Thanks everyone for the good advice. I'll look into Barnett springs and use a torque wrench.

96 INCH pounds = 8 FOOT pounds.
Most ft.lb. torque wrenches don't read accurately that low.
Use an in.lb. torque wrench.

The bolts break first, don't bother to ask how I know.
