Broken exhaust studs.

Post by killerdriller »

My 1993 1400 now has broken exhaust studs. Broken flush with the head, front cylinder. May end up needing a new head. Could use some help finding. Thanks and have a safe ride.

Try to drill them out with left handed drill bits.
center punch it, use a center drill, then use left handed bit.

I have often welded a nut onto the remaining stub and the heat helps loosen the threads, plus also gives you something to wrench on.

I find this to be a more successful route rather than drilling / EZ outs.

Hillsy, not a lot of folks have welding plants. I have had to drill broken studs out many times, always start small like 3 mm, spend some time getting a centre punch centralized then step up the bit size. Don't get greedy, the heat and torque generated by the drilling normally loosens the stud. Brake fluid is one of the best penetrants around but keep it off the paintwork. Left hand bit for the final bore.

From old machine floor days. Try to get a slot made with small dermal or other means. Douse with PB or any good stuff. Tap ,tap ,tap ,sometimes even the other way. Any thing to get it to move. When it does then most likely you will get it out in time with more short taps and set and wet again. Takes time this way.

Sure, but I'm just saying it's one of the better options.

You can buy a flux core from HF for around $100. Pretty handy thing to have in the workshop [emoji106]

I picked up a 180 amp inverter unit. Very light and very handy.
