Diode ???

Post by homieedoo1 »

Hello, I just have a quick question: What does the three legged diode do in the wiring harness on a 96 vs800 intruder ?

As with any diode, it acts as a check valve allowing power to travel through it on one direction, but not in the other.
Think of the difference between a standard light bulb, and a LED bulb...light emitting diode.
If you swap the positive and negative wires on a standard bulb, it will still light. Not so with a LED.

Thanks for the info...In the case of the intruder does it stop damage from a reverse polarity battery.

I believe it is for the same reason as the one on the 1400. It is in the start circuit to keep it from trying ot start if the kickstand is down with it in gear and the clutch not pulled in. It is a safety item. Not sure of the 800 but the 1400 manual explains it in the electrical system portion.
I can't seem to win the lottery. I think I have used up all of my good luck riding motorcycles.

Nothing will stop damage if you hook the battery up backwards.
