98 VL1500 crank no start after stator and regulator replace

My 1998 intruder 1500 had a stator and regulator go out and now it will crank and try to start. After a few seconds it backfires hard. I have heard that some of the aftermarket parts have the wires flipped so any information is helpful.

Welcome!
Someone will chime in soon. The VL1500 may be a something hillsy can help with so you may have to wait to later tonight since he is down under.

In the mean time.
Here are a couple of things to check out.

More than likely you have the pulse wires hooked up arse about face.

which wires are the pulse wires? are they apart of the stator loom or the regulator loom?

It appears that the 1500 has a single pickup and if it is not mounted properly the ignition timing will be wrong.

I don't have a manual on the 1500 but I looked it up on a parts catalog.

You probably will remember the part when you see it.

I would imagine that the single pickup system is mounted the same as the single pickup on the 800. So if you can't find a 1500 manual try the manual for the 800.

I went and looked the link SgtCall gave has a great manual for the 1500. Chapter 7 is electrical and will let you know how to check it.

You can't physically have the signal generator in the wrong spot - it is a fixed location. However the polarity may be wrong. Green wire is +ve, brown is -ve.

so i know the aftermarket looks a little funny for color but if i check the harness connector i should be able to see the color coding and swap pins on the stator harness

Yeah it can be confusing - the stock wires on the signal generator are green for +ve and blue for -ve.....however the wires going into the ignitor are then green for +ve but brown for -ve. No idea what the colors might be for aftermarket....

The resistance across the unplugged SG should be 178-242 ohms and the voltage when the engine cranks should be more than 2.4VDC.
