‘99 VL1500 Speedometer Needle Broken

Post by 136crewchief »

My ‘99 VL1500 speedometer needle disintegrated. I could only find one assembly for sale on eBay; too much $$$$$ I’d like to repair it, replace it with an aftermarket GPS gauge, or if possible upgrade the fuel tank cover and speedometer with the next generation Boulevard C90 parts which I will have an easier time finding. Are the 2005+ speedometers plug and play with the 1999 wiring? Will the 2005+ fuel tank cover fit a 1999? Can a speedometer shop change the mileage of a used gauge to reflect the miles on MY bike?

According to this site:

https://www.cheapcycleparts.com/oempart ... 2006/parts

the speedo and speed sensor are different part numbers.

With enough effort anything is possible, just make sure the effort is worth it.

While the pat numbers are different that doesn't mean they might not work/fit. Quite often manufactures will change part numbers when they do a change to a model.

The only way to know would be to actually hold them side by side or possibly check with a large MC wrecking yard.
I can't seem to win the lottery. I think I have used up all of my good luck riding motorcycles.

The C90 has an FI light so as far as "plug and play" between this and the LC it won't be "completely" compatible. No idea if the plug is the same and the speedo pins are in the correct spot - but it could be an expensive exercise if it doesn't work.

It might be worth trying to take the glass out of the original speedo and replacing the needle? We have a few businesses over here (Australia) that specialise in rebuilding / repairing instruments and for that type of job it would not be that expensive. No idea if you have the same sort of specialists where you are.

I spoke with my local speedometer repair shop and they said the weight and balance of a new needle would need to be identical in order for a replacement needle to calibrate correctly. I’m still researching this topic and I’ll try my best to document the mod/repair and post it here. Thanks.
