What kind of Cabin if you had one?

Post by n-trude »

Back when I was trying to read about cabins I found one about a famiIy.
He had about 50 acre's and wanted to have room for his famiIy.
So he buiIt a main house with big kitchen, and famiIy room.

The they buiIt smaII cabins apart from the others, for their grown kids.
This sounded great, they used the big cabin to meet and eat meaIs.
They reteated to their own cabins at night.

So how wouId yor Iike to make something for your group?

Been too coId to work on my cabin. Hope to go this week.

The main house with satellite cabins for family and friends sounds like my ideal. To that I would add a barn, the barn and main house facing one another with two cabins each side of house also facing the barn in a semi circle. Barn doors open to the housing structures with a court yard in the middle for bbq and dancing during barn dances. Been dreaming about this for a long time. A large fire pit with plenty of parking space for bikes and camping.

CabinPorn, just my kind of porn. [emoji106] At the present time I have a 10 x 16 with two lofts storage building being turned into a livable building. I have also bought (am buying) an 18 x 20 carport to put the leaky Ford van under. When spring gets here the plans are to buy the HF carport/canopy made out of 100% waterproof, ripstop triple-layer polyethylene. Then I can put the bike under the real carport and buy a picnic table to go under it to sit at/on during the nice summer days.

Building is made by Derksen and carport is made by Texwin. Paying it out is going to cost me a lot more that if I saved the money up and bought with cash, except I just don't have the cash or a place to stay till I get the money saved up. :bang:

I'm trying to get everything off grid but most will have to wait till winter is over and I can unhook the power and hook up the solar panels to see how that works out. I have no idea what this axis shift is going to do to my solar in the spring/summer. :OhNo;

I designed a cabin in 2015 when I thought I was going to build one on my uncles farm/pond. Was planning to build the entire thing myself. But that of course fell through so now I'm starting to scout out some land where I can build. My number one requirement is there's a pond or a lake close by for fishing...

2 bedroom 1 bath:

I think that cabin is neat.
What program did you use to make the 3D Iayout?

That is going to make a great cabin.

I know you can do it cheaper but mine at 16 x 40 for my price was what I think is faster.

I am oId and not as good cIimbing a Iadder, so I went the pre buiId and deIiver route.

I hope to have $25 totaI in mine when its done.... Iot, cabin, and inside finished.

Any cabin of mine will have a covered porch with several rocking chairs on it. And a wood burning fireplace.

Mine would be portable and on the water.....Houseboat....Something simple and functional in design... There's 25,000 miles of navigable waterways in the USA......most of them are free of rental facilities......It would have to be self efficient with multiple solar panels backed up with a suitable sized generator and a big enough inboard engine to navigate properly...
I love the water...
Of course it would have a built in room for my bike and proper landing equipment... That would be my ideal..."Living the life of Reilly" [emoji106]

several examples.....Nothing fancy but functional

Personally n-trude I think what you did was genius! Well planned out, well executed and now you're up and running on a very reasonable budget! Well done! [emoji106]

My design above would have run between 25 and 30k for just the material depending on the foundation, concrete vs posts. That did not include finishing the inside, just the completed shell. I was planning to build it over the course of 2 or 3 years. Give me a nice project to work on while I'm waiting to retire. But since that's not happening, the new plan is to find our own acreage with a pond and build a smaller version of the cabin right on the pond. Then in 2 to 4 years when we retire, sell our house and have a new home built on the acreage. Then the cabin serves as a guest house and a fishing/party lodge.

The software I use for the design is Home Designer Architectural. It's pretty good. The only down side is there's a big learning curve. But once I understood the software I can whip up a house design in nothing flat. It's excellent for doing floor plans and 3D rendering...

And yes... there will be a wood burning stove! [emoji41]

My design was based on this picture I found on the internet. The only thing I would change would be to run the roof over the deck...

I don't need a cabin...
I now have everything I want... a 5 bedroom home with basement full of entertaining features like hot tub, pool table, darts, bar with full kitchen prep area and personal movie theater on 10 acres near a wonderful lake and my own pond in the making with dock and area for entertaining & BBQ.
