Funny how the era shapes the perspective.
Actually, a large part of it was for agriculture. the trees were in the way of the farmers.

Back in the 1800's, the Willamette Valley was all timberland. The people moving into the area wanted farmland. They just burned a large number of trees to clear the land for farming.

My grandfather and father worked in the redwoods in northern CA. Nothing fake about those photos.

The butt cut log with the smooth area had been trimmed because on many of the big trees the pulled slivers would be as much as 10 ft long, they wouldn't transport them that way, too much weight.

I can't seem to win the lottery. I think I have used up all of my good luck riding motorcycles.

Lotta cool pics, that [emoji106]

I liked this one. That's amazing what those old trucks could do through gears. That's gotta be 30-40 tons of log I bet.

Just read up on it....cool article.

They should start calling it the dead sea soon.

I still remember my dad driving his 1950 Ford through a huge tree which had been carved out. I don't know if it was a Redwood or Sequoia, but it was on a family trip out west when I was 10 yrs old. I'll never forget it.

That one was famous. It finally fell, hit by lightning or something.

actually I guess there were a few of them. This was the one I was thinking of. I knew it had something to do with weather.

There is this one in Sequoia Park. We rode our bikes through it in September 2017

The General Grant tree and the General Sherman tree are both still standing, neither has been carved out.

When I was working in the woods we had a pine tree that the butt cut was over 6 ft on the little end of a 16ft log (the first 4 logs were cut to 16 ft because of the size of it). The 966 loader couldn't pick it up, the back of the loader just went up. Had to use the D8 blade to hold the back down while he lifted it and back the truck under it. And no one had a camera...

My dad used to have a bunch of photos of 40's and 50's logging. I think he gave them all to a local museum.

Not only your name but your rhetoric presents you as very intelligent, you should post more. Have you decided what you are going to do when you leave school.

Sitka Spruce trees can also get very large.
We saw this one up in the Quinault Rain Forest.

Sitka spruce is valued for its wood, which is light, soft, and relatively strong and flexible. It is used for general construction, ship building and plywood. The wood has excellent acoustic properties and is used to make sounding boards in pianos and other musical instruments such as violins and guitars.
A top-grade soundboard will cost from $35 to $50. But the price of construction grade Sitka spruce approaches that of pine. Specially sawn, vertical grain lumber may cost $3 a board foot.

I don’t cut trees. Me and my boy doggie piss on them.

Signifying monkey, stay up in your tree. Always lying and signifying, but you better not monkey with me.

You notice how nice and civil those gentlemen look with their hands in their pockets? My point... it was a hard job cutting into that tree, but they aren't about to show how hard it was. [emoji106]
