Today in history

Post by BlacktopTravelr »

It was on this day in 1975 that we lost the Edmund Fitzgerald. I don't remember what I was doing that day, but I can never forget the song by Gordon Lightfoot. For some reason youtube is messing up on me so I hope you can hear the song. Like you haven't heard it a hundred times already.

I thought you might want a little light reading on it so I found this.

Yep, it is a sad song that stays with you for a long time after you hear it. I noticed the Arthur M Anderson, the ship that was with the Fitz when it went down, was on it's way to Duluth and should be there sometime today. 39 years and counting since the accident.

Talking about traffic lights... Traffic lights are great in most cases but the little city of Bolivar, MO found that the ordinary stop sign worked much better at traffic control. They have a square with the courthouse in the center with all road meeting there. A light was installed but traffic was always a big bottle neck. One day a simi truck came through town and took out one of the traffic lights on NE corner. A stop sign was put at each intersection until the system could be repaired.
Well funny thing was that the traffic now flow smoothly and with no bottle neck at all.
The residences all pleaded with the city to please not place the light back at the intersections. The city was all too happy to leave the stop signs since it saved the city thousands of dollars without the light. Since the roads were business State Hwy routes the city had to convince the State Hwy Dept to go along too. In time all was worked out. So no traffic signals there was a good thing. :big grin:

City Island in NYC uses lights with just a red and green light. The island is so small and the speed limit so slow they don't need a yellow light. :HatTip: :hat:

I was in the third grade. There was a handset on the wall of every classroom. The teachers never used it. Us kids didn't really know what it was for and most probably just thought of it as a telephone to the Principal's office, as I recall. That phone on the wall rang one day. We didn't know what that meant. The teacher answered the phone when it rang and after a moment of conversation that we couldn't hear, she told us the president was shot. Tears came to EVERYONES faces when we learned the news while we were in class at that moment.

At that time, I don't think us kids really knew what it meant that the President had been shot really meant, but I do remember that at that time, we loved the president and we all knew he was a very important man. A good man that did good things.
