But why don't you be of some use to me and tell me how to cut the top join of a steel 4x2 hip roof rafter. Your a builder are'nt you.

Its a steel hip at 7/12 or 30,5 degrees ---you will understand this.

That link was helpfull thank you. However I was looking for some get out to attaching the pent rafter to the pent board, this may well be that I have done it wrong . I am working with 4x2x1.8 mm steel and welding upside down 4 meters above the ground in 45 degree heat. I am presented with the challenge of slicing the pent rafter by hand with a 4 inch grinder leaving me with a 1-2 mm gap--probably impossible.

Roofing is not my trade, some of the pictures of pent roofs and the joints are just beautiful and the structure fantastic.

I have come to the conclusion that I shall simply make a steel plate welded to the roof frame and to the pent rafter simply help by 1 bolt in the middle. I have seen this type of forgiving join on fairground structures and bridges.
