1400 fuel tank
Looking at a used 1400. 97 model apparently has a tank leak due to rust. I've coated the inside of a tank a few times with mixed results. I'd likely have to have the holes welded up first. What's the possibilities of finding a replacement tank? are they specific to 1400s? would an 800 tank or any other fit the 1400?
thanks....first of MANY questions I'll probably have!

Re: 1400 fuel tank
Often the rust is right at the level of the Gasoline that is in the tank. You'll often see a "ring" around the tank at this level. Is that what you see?
They show up from time-to-time both here and on Ebay. I've found that taking some time to find the Motorcycle Boneyards online and calling them produces results a bit quicker. Most of them at located in The South. Having a list of them might prove to be a good asset as you work on yours.
(don't ask me how I know this)
Yep!
An 800 can be made to fit with ALOTTA work, but it would be a Step Backwards.
As best I know, they were all the same.
You are Welcome! Glad you're here!

Re: 1400 fuel tank
They tend to rust out near the bottom by the seat. Since it is a hard area to inspect you may be better off getting a new one but may have an issue matching paint. Not many new ones left for the 1997 paint colors but you may be able to find a newer model with unmatched paint. I replaced a 98 tank with a 2001 or 2002 tank. The colors were the same but switched the inset and main color from the original.
I will see if I can get Bronx Intruder to come up, he may have a used one on hand.

If you have any type of electrical issue, have your battery load tested before you do anything else. Any auto parts store will test it for free.

Re: 1400 fuel tank
Agree - all the tanks I've seen have rusted at the water line. Water is heavier than fuel so it will sink to the bottom.
If you can find a radiator repair shop they would probably be the only sort of guys left who would attempt to weld / braze the holes.

It will fit but like always be careful with online purchases.

Re: 1400 fuel tank
thanks guys. I reached out regarding the new tank. Still looking for affordable options, but a reasonable clean tank interior is a must. Once I have a good look at the original tank, I can assess if brazing/sealing is a good option.
in the meantime. I'll post up a pic once I figure that part out. Given that it's been sitting, all fluid locations will have to be cleaned and/or replaced. it's only 6k miles, but we know low mileage is not a fact of dependability. I plan to replace all hoses, etc. lots of TLC maintenance work to be done to make it road worthy.

Re: 1400 fuel tank
Sorry Dave.
I didn’t see your PM until today.
And the system won’t let me replay to you as I haven’t been active here long enough.
I still have the tank. If interested message me again but maybe include your email address or phone number so we can communicate.

I'm not sure if I got a message from you or not. (yeah...new here.) I'm currently working on getting my original tank reburbished. if that doesn't work as expected, and if you still have the tank, I'll circle back to you.kirbster1966 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 19, 2022 3:34 pmSorry Dave.
