Hi from Sweden (vs800 & vs1400)

Post by Kaemon1400 »

Thanks for letting me in, recently joined as I saw talk about designer springs.
I’m a 22 year old chap from Sweden/England.
At the moment I’m riding a 2000 vs 800, but I’ve got a 1400 waiting for me in the garage for when I get my heavy license. Besides motorcycles and motorcycle camping road trips (my biggest hobby), I love sailing boats, got a 30ft, and MMA, practiced 4-something years.
Absolutely love the 800s and 1400s, clutch is bad on my dad’s 1400 so looking to get new springs for it, and I was thinking I might as well throw new plates in there, Barnett performance plates, so if anyone thinks those plates are a bad idea I’d love to hear about it.
Glad to be in this group tho. :)
(Would post pictures of them both but I can’t find how it’s done)

Welcome aboard!
Always glad to see new people here, especially those still riding the Intruders.

What years are your and your Dad's bikes?

I started with an '87 1400 and now own a '99.

The stock clutch springs on the 1400's are pretty much junk but I doubt that the clutch plates themselves are bad. On my '87 I had gone through 3 sets of springs and decided I needed new plates and springs at about 25,000 miles. Bought the plates and stock springs and when I took it apart I measured the plates, the new and used ones were so close to the same that it wasn't even measurable.

Just before I bought the 99 I heard about Designer's springs and mentioned to my son about the issue. He bought me a set for my B-Day. I had already bought the 99 and sold the 87 and the clutch in the 99 was working good so I hung onto them. The 99 had 8700 miles when I bought it and at about 12,000 miles the clutch started slipping. I put the springs in and rode it for 180,000 miles, put a used engine in it and the springs in the replacement engine and have put over 60,000 miles on it. The clutch still doesn't slip.

I fought the 87 for 154,000 miles replacing the springs every 11-13,000 miles. One set only lasted 8,000 miles. Designer's springs are the best thing you can buy for the 1400.
I can't seem to win the lottery. I think I have used up all of my good luck riding motorcycles.

If you have any type of electrical issue, have your battery load tested before you do anything else. Any auto parts store will test it for free.

I recognise that story, I think I’ve read another one of your posts and it may very well be your post that made me join, for the Designer springs.
Got my 800 when I was 20, that’s a 2000, and my dad’s 1400 is a 1998.
A bit like your son, looking to get my dad those springs.
I have read that the plates should be fine, he wants to get a new set of plates at the same time, but I’ll let him know that the stock plates should be just fine.
Glad to hear from a fellow intruder rider! I’ll be riding that 1400 until my last days hahah
