Ground Cable

Post by TogaRiderNY »

Another rainy day leaves the bike in the garage again.

So what better way to spend the day off than tearing into the bike instead

Okay so here's my current issue:

The ground cable terminal that connects to the battery looks fried/melted/fuggered :hellfire: . The terminal used to be an O and is now a C.

1) why the heck did that even happen?
2) Would you say it is better to cut the terminal off and crimp on a new one? I only have low budget crimp tools, so I don't know what I would need to get that accomplished.
3) or would you recommend just buying a whole new ground cable setup for the 800 and replacing the old one. Anything to look out for if taking that route?

Thanks!!

Here's one, probably cheaper than from a dealer:

Are you talking the main cable? It probably was loose, arced, and fried.
You could replace it or solder a new terminal on.
The other end bolts to the engine just above the oil fill.

Whatever you decide, place a starwasher under the attaching bolt to give it a good connection.

Thanks Nav! I went ahead and ordered it! Fingers crossed it's an easy swap!

Swapped it out with nothing more than a few scratches on the hands and bruised knees.

The switch out was incredibly easy, even with the tight spaces and my wife sitting on the garage couch laughing at me

Glad to say I have another notch added to my "experience" belt

Thanks again Nav

Way to go and my wife has laughed at me over 51 years now.Better than when mad at me for buying another bike when have ten all ready!! .Working on my old 37 truck now and she likes riding in it as has about come to a end on the motorcycles at 70 now.Has not been on a out of state ride with me in a few years now.
The more you can learn about your motorcycles and work on them your self the better off you are IMO.It is a punch on your man card all so [emoji106] .Good luck and have fun. :putput:
