"Final Drive Mod" on the vs800?

Post by Acton67 »

Recently saw a discussion on Facebook about this. Apparently it's possible to replace the rear diff from the 800 with the one from the 1400 to lower rpms at highway speeds. Anyone know anything about this? Some are calling it the "final drive upgrade", others call it the "1400 mod".

From what I recall they are interchangeable and the 1400 has a lower ratio = lower revs.

Just did this conversion last week. I got a 2001 vs1400 rear diff assembly and graphed it to my 2000 vs800. Only modifications needed are widening the flange holes one the swing arm and grinding down some of the reliefs from the aluminum molding of the hub. (just install the wheel when the shaft and drive is on and you'll see and hear what I'm talking about when you spin the wheel.) Fits like a glove and made the bike feel much better in terms of gearing. Best mod for the vs800 in my opinion!

Here's your picture. Love the Trump sticker by the way.

If you have any type of electrical issue, have your battery load tested before you do anything else. Any auto parts store will test it for free.

I been considering this mod for years and recall several from the original Intruder Alert doing so.
My recollection is…
Other than the drive unit you would need the 1400 drive shaft, u-joint, and axle spacer.
Could anyone elaborate if this is correct?
Thanks!

All you need is the drive shaft assembly, as shown in the image attached. From what i can recall, all other parts from the 800 can be used with it, including the u joint. Plus you do have to oval the flange holes to get the shaft to fit the 800 swing arm.

if you decide to go for it and have any issues, ill be here to guide you through it.

God Bless
