UGH, now I have aproblem with my 97 VS800 - Buzzing at fuel pump

Post by Georgey »

So now when I try to start this bike there is a buzzing at the fuel pump when I push the button.

New starter solenoid.
New battery and fully charged.
New spark plugs and wires.
Wire connections to the pump are good.

For background, which probably isn't necessary, I started having problems in the late summer of 2020 when the bike suddenly would not run, unless I constantly gave it throttle. If I let go of the throttle, it would die. I read on some other boards that it could be dirty carbs. Cleaned the carbs. After cleaning carbs I still had the problem. So I cleaned them again. Then I started having starting issues - wouldn't start. Bought a new starter solenoid and battery. (For those who read my post about batteries, I already had bought a Yuasa - I'll probably get a Motobatt or Scorpion for another bike when I'm finished with it).

Do I just I need a new fuel pump?

Are you saying these sounds arer different than the 'ticking' sounds the Pulse Pump makes as it primes the carbs ?

I honestly don't know. I can't remember wheat a normal vs800 fuel pump sounds like since I changed the exhaust on all my bikes. It sort of just buzzes.

I would say it is different from ticking

I actually held the fuel pump in my hands while trying to start it and it does click/hum/buzz and vibrate when I push start. That's it.

try removing the fuel line from the carb and pump the fuel into a container It should pump a little over a pint in 1 minute. BTW, the container should be at about the same height as the front carb.

Do you have a manual? If not email me and I can send you a pdf copy.
I can't seem to win the lottery. I think I have used up all of my good luck riding motorcycles.

If your getting fuel to the pump it should shut off when the pressure builds and make no noise at all.
Make sure you have fuel getting to the pump
You can download the manual here
http://www.mediafire.com/file/5ha60s9sk ... E.pdf/file

Now it should work

Buzzing is usually caused by a bad trip mechanism or fouled contactors. Problem with the OEM pump is that you cannot access them.

I have a manual thanks Herb. I haven’t tried your suggestion yet because I think I was low or empty (I’m an idiot). So I just filled it up and now it’s still ticking and vibrating but it’s slowed down. Now it won’t even tick.

Always good to check to see if the Battery is fully charged.

I re-read all that's been posted of your symptoms/problems, one thing I am not clear on. Does the bike run at all right now?

If not,..could it be that there's some sort of Fuel starving that keeps fuel from even getting to the Pump? Like the Fuel Cock turned partially/totally off or blocked,...or a pinched fuel line?

The bike will not turn over - nothing. Lights are on but that’s it now - no more ticking.

I guess the more general question I have is why did I have this problem in the first place —-that is, I think and of course could be wrong, but I’m thinking about when I had a problem in late summer of 2020 when suddenly after months of problem free riding my 97 vs800 all of a sudden would not stay on, unless I had to give it throttle.

Thinking it was the carbs I cleaned them, but I wonder if my problem last year related to my current one.

OK so I disconnected the fuel pump and gas poured out of the hose which connects the tank to the fuel pump - and some gas came out from the hose that connects the fuel pump to the carb. So can I assume that my fuel pump is getting gas?

That would be an Affirmatory!

Now that this question is answered,.. and assuming your Battery is fully charged,..Could you run the Fuel Pump Delivery Test that Mighty Herb suggested?

Yeah, so it looks as if the fuel pump's working - I turn the throttle and its spitting out gas.

So could I have put the wrong hose to the wrong "outlet" on the one of two outlets on the fuel pump?

what's could be wrong?
