Carburetor Idles High During Ride-Ok when first crank it

Post by LSU Tiger »

I have a 2000 Intruder VS800 with 76k. When I start it cold after sitting overnight it idles great. Not too high, not too low. But after riding a few minutes when you slow down (say at a stop sign) the carburetors idle high. Too high for comfort. I oiled the hand grip although it did not seem to need it. I loosened the cruise control screw almost all the way out. There is slack in the cable at both carburetors (when I get home and it is still idling high after sitting, say one hour). It did this the last three days I rode the bike. Do you think I can oil the cables or do I need to replace the cables? Could it be something internal in one of the carburetors? Thanks. Joey Broome

You can lube the cables, do you have 1/8" or so of freeplay at the grip?
What cruise control screw are you referring to?
Have you adjusted the thumbwheel idle screw on the rear carb?
Can you manually force the butterflys closed on either carb?

Problem solved. I turned the thumb screw counterclockwise about one full turn and went for a test drive. It idled low after it warmed up. Exactly like it is designed to do. In twenty years I have never had an idle problem with the bike and I was always scared to turn that thumb screw for fear I would mess the idle speed up. My guess is my motorcycle repair friend turned the idle up when he was trying to break the clutch plates loose. Thanks very much.

When I saw you had yet another issue, I tuned in right away to see what was up.

'Tis Most Excellent that your problem was solved right away and you are back On-The-Road again.

You have certainly had your share of challenges in recent months.

Hope all is well with you.
