Transmission Gear Lash

Post by Dchmura123 »

Recently I've noticed a slight clunk when releasing the clutch and getting on the throttle during up shifts. No clunks or odd noises on downshifts and otherwise the s50 is running like a champ. Today i replaced and bled the clutch fluid, it definitely helped smooth out my shifting but im still getting a small clunk. It kind of sounds like its coming from the tranny but not 100% sure. Hopefully this weekend i can pull off the rear tire, inspect the driveline for excessive play and grease properly. Any idea how much backlash the tranny on these s50's should have? Anyone else have this issue?

Two issues.
A fresh oil change will clear up a clunky tranny.
Some bikes were not properly lubricated at the rear splne of the drive shaft. Disassembly, and good lubing with a 80% moly lube spline grease is in order.

Picked up 3 quarts of oil, a filter and a fresh bottle of gear oil earlier today. Just gotta find me some moly grease and ill be ready to rock  for this weekend. Fingers crossed! Hopefully this is the cure. Thanks for the reply Navigator, your time is very much appreciated.

What are you using for moly grease? I can't seem to find any 80% molybdenum locally

Just behind the oil drain plug is a small plate held by 4 bolts. This is the oil screen cover, it is a good idea to remove this and check for any kind of debris lurking there. Also, use a brass wire brush and a little gasoline to clean the screen (suede brush).

Also check your swingarm bearings - they can make that sort of noise if they are loose or worn.

It's also surprising how small they are relative to the power / torque they have to deal with.

What do you guys think of this moly paste? I have a sealed tube of it in my basement just wondering if its sufficient enough.

That may work, I'm not sure what the moly content is.
I use the Loctite 234227 LOC51048 Moly Paste Anti-Seize Compound mentioned on the amazon link you posted.
I used to use Honda Moly 80 paste, but they don't make it any more.
Use it in the drive shaft splines and also on the wheel splines, A little goes a long way on the wheel splines.

Upon further review, I believe the Honda stuff you have is 77% and should work fine.

Looking even further, there is quite a controversy, it may only be 3% moly ?????
I like the Loctite Moly Paste.

I hear ya Navigator. There is too much controversy surrounding the "Honda m-77" and there seems to be no straight answer as to what percentage moly it contains. Im going to take the safe route and pick up some of the loctite you mentioned above.
