Front Brake Cleaning Question

In the process of changing the brake pads and cleaning the area behind them. I’ve read on here that by gently pressing the lever with the pads out you can get the pistons to extend from the caliper allowing you to clean it with some brake cleaner. I was wondering how far out to extend the pistons for this. I’ve got them to about 4mm away from the inside of the caliper, so I wasn’t sure if that was adequate for cleaning all the dust out or if I should keep going a little bit. I would rather not shoot the pistons out if the caliper....
