Oil Change Frequency

Post by JamesC »

I do a lot of urban driving here in North Jersey. Most of my trips are 25 miles or less with a lot of stop and go traffic. I change my oil and filter every 2,000 miles, sometimes less. I was wondering, could I change the oil at 1,500 miles without changing the filter, and then again after another 1,500 miles with a filter change? So I would be changing the oil twice and the filter once every 3,000 miles. I use Shell Rottella 15W 40 which is not very expensive, but the K&N chrome filter is a little pricey. What do you guys think?

Stop using K&N filters. Using modern day oils and filtration a full change can be anywhere between 3000 & 5000 miles any longer is not a good idea because the same oil is used by the gears.

I like the chrome oil filter. I love chrome. Guess I'm old school, I'm not one of the "black is the new chrome" crowd. I have a chrome drive shaft cover, battery box, and yes I work to keep it nice and shiny. I would like to get the chrome side panels and collar covers I see on some of the European bikes, but haven't found them for sale in the U.S.

Chrome neck and side covers are not aftermarket. You will just have to clean off the paint and take them to be chromed. Chrome filter covers are available through Ebay.

Or get a K&P Filter and just clean it when you do an oil change. The billeted aluminum goes great with the chrome.
