Pitting on the upper fork

Post by Leckbass »

I'm working on a set of forks and wondering what you think about these. Seems like too much pitting for my liking.

If the pits aren't in the seal area, I wouldn't sweat it. JMO.

There are a few very small marks by the seal area, most of it is up top.

What would you use to polish the spots out?

I have a 2-wheel, 2 compound stainless steel polishing set that has worked on most surfaces - don't go too overboard with the coarse compound and take your time. Wheels attach to my electric drill or air die grinder

I believe the tubes are chromed. Be very careful removing material or you will be replacing them.
If they are not round they will leak worse than a small pit would cause, JMO

Navigator is right - I was referring really to "most of it is up top" but good to stress not messing with the sealing ability

I polished the lowers, replace the seals and the dust wipers, and left the uppers alone. I figured if I did any work on the uppers, it might leave it uneven surface.

Couldn't get it all back together today, got too late. I'll reinstall the forks tomorrow add the springs and the oil and hope for the best.

I'll let you know in a few months if they're leaking or not.
