Intruders-Alert

I am changing out all 4 turn signals on my 92 Intruder VS 1400 to all LED.
I have the new electronic flasher relay.I read on some posts about installing a diode for the indicator light.Does anyone have any info ?

If you use a no-load LED specific flasher relay there is no need for resistors.

For what it's worth, the LC has diodes already in the instrument cluster for the single indicator light (I remember buying an LED relay for mine and there was no "bleeding" across the sides). Just checked the wiring diagram for the LC and they are there.

Probably doesn't help with your 1400, but interesting to know they did it on the LC.

So on my S83 I would only need a electronic flasher???

I have a 92 also but a VS800. I am guessing the process would be the same.
I too am wanting to do a full LED upgrade.
Would I need diode for each signal light (4) ?
Or a diode for each dummy light (2) ?

You need to add two diodes, to change the diagram on the left ('92) to that on the right ('06):

on my 2007 s83, several years ago, I have tried putting on the Custom Dynamics LED bulbs with the automobile flasher/relay, but the bulbs didn't flash (they stayed on solid, IIRC) and they were not noticeable brighter. I still have those bulbs...

Your flasher relay was probably not a no load / LED style flasher. If you use LED bulbs on a normal relay they won't draw enough current to make the flasher work properly.

If you have 4 way flashers you don't need the diodes.

Thanks hillsy. I am pretty sure that I bought the no load flasher, because this was suggested by other members at the old intruderalert forum at the time. I will take a look at it again when I have the seat up.

For what its worth...,
i just changed the indicators on my '87 vs1400 and just swapped the mechanical flasher relay for a cheap ($1.50) adjustable electronic chinese one and it works perfectly.
There just wasnt enough draw on the system to make the mechanical relay operate, so indicators (flashers) just stayed on.
I checked this first by temporarily wiring an extra 21w bulb to the grey wire (front) on each side, and low & behold they started flashing again.
So i knew it was just a current issue, which the electronic relay fixed (and you can adjust the flash rate)
Initially I thought i may have to do diodes etc, but it seems not. Just a simple plug&play fix.

So, is the turn indicator on the 'dash' panel working? Did you replace it with LED, too?

Dash panel just has the standard incandescent bulb and works as it should..

So, you have an '04 or newer, with 4-way flashers?

No i have an '87 ... just has a single dash light and either left or right indicators/flashers on

There were no indicators on it when i got it, just the two three prong connections inside the headlight.

It took me a bit of working out why there would be three wires and not too, but then after studying the wiring diagram, realised (it was imported from the US in '95) it must be for twin filament bulbs (''running lights''? not sure how that works? do the front indicators remain on solid all the time? Things are a little different for USA/UK)
So i wired in some extra bulbs to add to the current drain, the relay started behaving and low and behold i have flashing indicators.

So grabbed an electronic adjustable relay form another bike i have, tested it (after removing the extra bulbs i wired in previously) and it all worked fine So grabbed another cheap relay from the 'bay : )
And im just off to get a ticket (MOT) now, yesss-ii, on the road!
