Charging failure

Post by Pvt_Nemesis »

First off I have to apologise to MotoBatt - the issue lies with my charging system :( What was an intermittent charging issue has now reared its ugly head fully;
- 2005 S83 Boulevard
- no charge at all delivered to battery i.e. constant voltage over range of revs
- the reg/rec shows an open circuit across ALL pins

so the regulator/rectifier is definitely cooked and Ill replace it BUT Im unsure of the stator;
- shows increasing voltage with revs i.e. good
- continuity between all pins i.e. good
- continuity to ground i.e. bad

So is the stator okay? How else do you test it (digital multimeter)?
Ya hya chouhada!

You unplug the stator and check the AC voltage between each of the 3 wires with the bike running at 5k RPM. It should produce 80VAC minimum.

You also set your meter for Ohms and measure each of the 3 wires to the others; values should be very low, and very nearly the same. Then, you measure any one to the engine case; it should be open circuit, or nearly so.

Okay after an initial quote of $260 for an OEM stator, I supplied VIN no. and now its apparently a different part and over $1,100!!!

2005 S83 Boulevard - anyone else replaced the stator in this year and got a part number for stator?
Does the fact it was made for Canadian market make any difference?

And now the reg/rec quoted at $158 is $406 because of VIN details specifying different part!

HELP - are Suzuki Christchurch mad or is this model different?

Don't go to a dealer to get a stator - they are quoting for a genuine Suzuki one.

I bought a stator for my LC from Ricks in the US and had it shipped to Oz for under $250.

There's HEAPS on eBay - here you go:

Thanks hillsy - just ordered a stator and reg/rec from RMstator in Canada. I hope they are as good and reliable as my research indicated. Anyone here used them before?

I bought a stator from them about 12 years ago. Good price, received quickly, worked well for over 80,000 miles, still in the old engine, I figure it is a spare.
I can't seem to win the lottery. I think I have used up all of my good luck riding motorcycles.

A note for others;
when removing the left engine case to replace stator you need to drop the footpegs/shifter assemby to get the required clearance.
Easy enough, 8 Allen-key boltys on underside of footpeg bracket beneath bike.

BUT THE OUTERMOST FOUR OF THESE HAVE SPLITPINS RETAINING THEM.

I found out too late but luckily didnt mess up the thread
