What does this thing do.
Can it make the Bike smoke?

My bike smoked sometimes out of the rear jug.
I'm thinking if this unit opened the ex valve a bit on the intake stroke it could suck in some oil.

That mite explane why lt leaves a smoke screen one minute but if i cut it off and restart the smoke stops.

Well it stops about half the time on the first try.

i suppose it could. It should cause the engine to miss on that cylinder.

It could be that the cable is sticking.

An easy check would be to take the decorative chrome cover off of the cylinder that is causing the problem and when it happens push the lever to the run position (extending the cable). If the smoking stops, then something is causing it to hold the exhaust valve open. Then it would be a matter of finding out what is causing the problem. Cable or the decomp linkage itself. There is a return spring that could be going bad.

How long has it been since the cables were lubed?

ok the decomp thingie moves but when it returns it does not touch the stop. Looks like maybe a 16th inch or less space between the thingie and the stop.
Do l need to adjust this?
If yes will adjusting the rear throw the front out .?
What should l do?

Thanks for any ideas,

Prince.

Download the service manual...it gives a good write-up on how to properly adjust the cables.

Adjusting the rear won't throw the front out, but adjusting the front will throw the rear out. Lube the cables, and do a complete adjustment of the cables.

The adjustment instructions are on page 2-8 of the 1998-2006 manual that is pinned at the top of the 1400 forum.

To day while it was running i pushed back on the thingie Where the spring is on top of the rear jug. I could feel the cam turning.
Then when fired it up again it was smoking from the front jug. Then the front plug fouled.
That never happened before.

I looked close and the front and back thingings are about the same distance fron the stop.
About this much >>>l l<<< (note the space between the lines)

Do l adjust this with a feeler guage?
Looking for 1988 specs.

I found the settings for decomp.
It says .006 to .010

My front is over .100

Guess it needs some adjusting.

Excessive clearance would only mean that the de-comp unit doesn't quite open the exhaust valves as much as it could. I don't think it would cause the engine to smoke or foul plugs...it would be no different than the normal opening/closing of the exhaust valves when the engine is running normally. If the de-comp unit is not opening the exhaust valves enough, or not at all, it would put excessive strain on the starter. The purpose of the unit is to allow the starter to have the capability of spinning the 1,400cc motor over in order for engine start, and opening the exhaust valves for a second or two to relieve engine compression is the purpose. The de-comp unit only functions for one or two seconds. I would suggest that you lube the return springs and cables so that everything functions normally and doesn't get hung-up.

Thanks.
There was over .100th space.
Adjusted now it seems to start better.
However l didnt ride long enough to know if it still smokes.

I will know more later today.

Thanks for your input
