Re: VS1400 5th gear mod with input from Designer
I think Designer is waiting to answer questions and not to just start randomly chatting so I will start seeing as I started this old conversatiin back up.
So here are my questions.
I have both a 96 5spd and an 86 4spd 1400 motor and I have a full set of dusty gears from a 1500 I bought oh about 15 yrs ago for a gear mod. I am just not sure which motor I want to make the change in. Remember I have the the JE high compression pistons and a cam profile and a valve profile done as well as a dellorto carb so I want to get the most out of those mods.
The 86 motors had more hp and longer gears so I am thinking I should put my top end on the 4spd and use the 4spd to do the 5th gear mod.
1. am I correct that there is or was lol a 5th gear mod using the gears from a 1500 intruder for both the 4spd and the 5spd motors?
2. In your opinion, what is my best plan? to use the longer geared 86 motor and add the 5th gear or use the 96 motor and add a true useable 5th gear? I really like the longer gearing in the 4spd and they also had more HP
I am assuming that the difference in HP between these two motors was basically emmission changes or requirements and that I have already stepped past that. Unless it is a difference in the cdi which i overcame with the dyna3000.
I dont mind using parts from 1 motor to build the better motor. Is that something I should concider?
Thanks for the input and hopefully we can get a write up or a video uploaded to get this mod back online.

The 86 4 speed has a higher 4th gear than the 5 speed box. Not real sure about all the gear ratios in the 1500 5 speed but i have been told that the complete trans and shifter assembly will fit in the 4 speed box.
I can't seem to win the lottery. I think I have used up all of my good luck riding motorcycles.

Re: VS1400 5th gear mod with input from Designer
I though one of the mods for the 5 spd was to take 4 and 5 out and replace them with that of the 1500. Or was it 4th from the 4spd and 5th from the 1500?
Just trying to decide which motor to use long term. lol
I can take my heads from the 96 5 spd with the piston, cam and valve upgrades and move them to the 86 4spd and add the 5th gear or....
do the 4th and 5th gear change on the 96 motor.
the early motors had more hp. is that a null point because of the upgrades or is it in the 86 cdi? any ideas

With the Hardware you have,....I'd do this.
This has long been theorized as the source of the better power of the very first couple of model years. I believe thee is more to it though.
Any curves that were therein can, and have, been reproduced with the Dynatech 3000 and the other Transistorized Ignitor from Czechoslovakia.
Do take note,...the 1400 Ignitor is not a Capacitive Discharge Ignitor Unit (CDI).

I agree that there is more to it than the "igniter...thank you" as well. Probably emmissions stuffing fuel air etc...
