needs new tire and etc.

Post by subin »

Hello Everyone!
Old from the interuderalert.com and new here.
It is time for a new set of tires. Low mileage, still soft and no cracks, but 9 years old.
I am considering Dunlop 404 or Kenda K673 or Shinko 230.

I see that for the rear, I need 90 degree bend stem and I wonder if either TR87 or PV78 would work.
Also, for the rim protector strip, if 16" would also work for the 15" rear wheel.

Thanks for your help!

As for the tires, I like the Kenda.

Shinko, hands down. I believe you need a 15" rim strip. Tube , I've never selected, I always let whoever mounts my tires install whatever they use for that rim size.
Current rides: 03 HD FLHT & 01 Yamaha XVS650(BIP)
Former: 87 Suzuki VS700, 94 BMW K1100LT & 91 Honda CB250

I don't want to own them all, just ride them all.

Got the Dunlop 404 and the rear inner tube is the Bridgestone, which appears to only have the size with a 90 degree bend valve stem.
The guys at Cyclegear had a difficult time getting the rear tube valve stem to go through the hole on the rim, but they did it by working from the bottom. Also, the OEM rear rim strip is much wider than the ones that Cyclegear has, fortunately, the original one is still nice and soft, so we reused it and put the new thinner strip on top of it.

Stay away from the Dunlops , the traction just isnt there with those tires , I bought a set of Perelli "Route 66" front and rear to replace the 404's on my 1400 .. MUCH smoother ride , handling is much better rain or dry...

We've had Dunlops, Pirelli, and Metzelers.

Metzelers ALL DAY LONG. It used to be 880s, they are now replaced with 888.

Unbelievable difference in curves and wet weather. I am a true believer and will stay with them as long as I can get them.

But someone probably has similar feelings for other tires...

It takes me a long time to find the special tyres I require for my 1400. Usually about a week is required to find the cheapest god DAMED TYRES I CAN GET MY HANDS ON.

Im not one for going round corners fast, about 10 MPH would be enough for me. I sometime get off the bike and walk the corner first before returning for the bike and then push it round.

Ask a question like that and your gonna get a LOT of different answers. Last tire I bought was on e-Bay. :rag:

None of the tires you mention are the best rear tire for the 1400.

The best rear tire for the 1400 is the Yokohama Avid Envigor, in 195/65X15.

It provides good traction, wet, dry and even snow. I don't know how many miles you will get, but I have had it on my bike fore over 8,000 miles and it doesn't show any wear.

PLUS it costs less than the tires you are looking at.

I am running the Shinko 230 on the front, still in good shape with over 10,000 on it.

Oh, and I do ride it pretty dam hard. This summer I was dragging hard parts trying to keep up with my son on his 'busa. Wasn't able to keep up, but he never had to stop and wait for me either.
I can't seem to win the lottery. I think I have used up all of my good luck riding motorcycles.
